Affordable, UK Based Web Hosting

Linux or Windows Hosting

The list below shows the main differences between Windows and Linux hosting. It’s worth considering this information against your needs before placing an order. Not sure what you need? Get in touch and we’ll be happy to advise!

Reliability

The general consensus is that Linux is more reliable. Microsoft's Windows Server2003 is much more stable and reliable than previous versions.

Functionality

There isn't much that can be done on one platform that can't be done on the other, but there are significant differences in the underlying technologies. If your database is designed around the MS-SQL management system, you must run it on a Window-based server. It you need Mod_Rewrite, it’s only available on Linux! And there are a lot of other similar examples. If you’re running a large or complex website – an online store, for example – it’s worth talking to your developers about the kind of setup you need. For more straightforward sites, there is little difference in functionality between the two operating systems.

Security

Out of the box, neither Linux or Windows is very secure for Internet use. But we've made extensive modifications to both. We’ve removed unnecessary components and updated software to ensure that both platforms are highly secure. As such, our hosting packages offer a much greater degree of security than that offered by many of our competitors.

Price

Linux holds an edge due to the fact that the most of the software we use is open source (free). You will see that our prices reflect this.
